New Website for Continuing Education

The website Ræktum vitið (Cultivating Knowledge) has been launched as part of a major initiative in vocational education led by VR and the Commercial Federation of Iceland (LÍV), in collaboration with the Federation of Trade & Services (SVÞ). A cooperation agreement between VR/LÍV and SVÞ on continuing education and lifelong learning was signed in 2023. The agreement sets out a structured approach to increasing the skills of employees in the retail and service sectors through to 2030.

Allocation of VR Holiday Cottages in Winter

For the first time, VR holiday homes will be allocated for winter rentals in the 2025–2026 season during specific periods. The homes are rented out for one week at a time, starting on a Thursday. Outside these periods, it is possible to rent the homes for shorter stays without allocation.

Tax Exemption Brought to the Minister of Finance

The Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs has responded positively to VR’s request that union grants for psychological services for members be exempt from income tax and will review the matter in relation to the next tax year.

The nomination period for the positions of VR Chair and Board for the 2025–2029 term ended at noon today, Monday, February 3, 2025.Elections will be held for the position of Chair, seven seats on the Board, and three seats on the Alternate Board. The VR Election Committee received four nominations for Chairperson and seventeen for the Board, all of which have been deemed legally valid.

VR offers career development guidance

VR continues to offer career development guidance to its members, just as in previous years. The guidance is provided by career and education advisors from Mímir Lifelong Learning. These consultations are free of charge for VR members, and registration takes place on the VR website.

Fjarðabyggð Against Collective Agreements

Nearly a year ago, long-term collective agreements were signed in the general labor market, where employees accepted moderate wage increases during a period of inflation in exchange for employers refraining from price increases and the public sector holding back on fee increases. The hope was that this would create conditions for lower inflation and interest rate reductions, thereby protecting the purchasing power of employees.
