Company of the Year list

VR has sent out its Company of the Year survey every year for more than two decades. The goal of this project is to get a sense for employee satisfaction in the Icelandic labor market by giving workers the chance to voice their views on a wide array of topics via carefully crafted questionnaires.

Each company that reaches the survey’s minimum participation threshold receives an overall score, based on employee attitudes towards nine key factors in their working environments. These factors are management, work morale, salary, working conditions, flexibility at work, independence at work, company image, satisfaction at work and equality. Companies receive separate sub-scores for each individual factor on a scale from 1-5, based on employee evaluations of several relevant questions. These nine sub-scores are then amalgamated into a total score.

The list below shows the scores from the 2024 Company of the Year survey. The results are divided by size-category. Large companies are those with 70 employees or more. Medium companies are those with 30-69 employees. Small companies are those with fewer than 30 employees.

Total scores are calculated up to three decimal points, to break ties among the top-performing firms.

Please note that the only firms eligible to win awards (indicated with star icon) are those who ensured that all their employees (not only VR members) participated in the Company of the Year survey.

Company of the Year 2024

The results from VR ‘s annual Company of the Year survey are in! This year was the most ambitious yet, with the survey reaching almost 43,000 individuals in the general labor market.

Company of the Year list

Model Firms 2024

The fifteen companies with the highest overall score in each size category receive formal recognition as Model Firms 2024. VR congratulates them on their achievement

Family-Friendly Firms 2024

This year three companies, one in each size category, will be named as Family-Friendly Firms 2024. This is the second time VR awards this additional prize, in recognition of companies who strive to create a working environment which allows their employees to maintain a healthy balance between their professional and personal duties.

VR Education Award

This year three companies, one in each size category, will receive the VR Education Award 2024. This is the first time this additional prize is awarded, in recognition of companies who strive to create working environments which allow their employees to engage in lifelong learning and develop their skills on the job.

Methology

VR's survey on the Company of the Year 2024 reached all VR union members. Additionally, numerous companies were invited to send the survey to all employees, not just VR members. In total, 158 companies accepted this offer.

The Nine Key Factors

In the VR survey on the Company of the Year, employees are asked about their attitudes towards nine key factors in the internal work environment of companies. Each key factor is given a rating from one to five, and together they form an overall score, both for the companies that appear on the lists and the overall score for all respondents in the survey.
