Experience in Union Activities
For the past two years, I have been a union representative for Icelandair’s passenger services. When I assumed this role, wage negotiations were just beginning, giving me my first real insight into the work of the labor movement, which sparked a strong interest.
After the wage negotiations concluded last year, I joined the VR Youth Council, where our goal is to safeguard the interests of younger VR members and encourage more young people to participate in the labor movement.
Key Focus Areas
My primary focus is to engage more young people in the labor movement. Of VR’s 40,000 members, young people make up about half, and I want to advocate for their interests within the board and be their voice. For example, improving conditions for young people regarding parenthood, including the length and structure of parental leave and even parental grants, as offered by many other unions.
I also believe it is crucial to address the housing crisis, which has long spiraled out of control and affects everyone in the country, not just young people. A large group of young people are dissatisfied with their current situation and do not feel optimistic about improving living conditions in the coming years, highlighting the importance of focusing on enhancing their quality of life.
