Applications for Blær Housing Foundation Apartments – FAQs

  • A total of 34 apartments will be allocated in Blær’s first allocation. This includes 23 apartments in the multi-family building on Skyggnisbraut and 11 apartments in the multi-family building on Silfra- and Gæfutjörn. The breakdown by size is as follows:

    • Sixteen 2-room apartments (one bedroom)
    • Eight 3-room apartments (two bedrooms)
    • Eight 4-room apartments (three bedrooms)
    • Two 5-room apartments (four bedrooms)
  • The application period is from July 1st to September 6th, 2024. It does not matter when during this period the application is submitted.

  • You need to have a number on the Blær waiting list. Applicants are prioritized for allocation based on their waiting list number. Additionally, you must meet the conditions defined in Blær’s allocation rules. For example, you must be at least 21 years old, have been a full VR member for 24 months within the last 36 months at the time of allocation, not have owned property in the last five years, and you need to apply for an apartment that matches your family size.

  • Yes, you may need to submit additional documents by attaching them to the application form available on My Pages at vr.is. This includes in the following cases:

    • If you apply for an apartment that provides a room for your child aged 18-20, you must submit the child’s birth certificate to confirm the relationship.
    • If you apply for an apartment due to children registered at a different address, you must submit a confirmation from the District Commissioner that you (or your spouse) have joint custody of the child/children in question.
    • If you apply for an apartment that provides for a child over 20 years old who needs care due to mental or physical disabilities or illnesses, you must submit a confirmed disability assessment from the Social Insurance Administration or a medical certificate proving that the child needs such support and that it is a permanent condition.
    • If you are expecting a child and want to apply for an apartment according to your expected family size, you must submit a pregnancy certificate to confirm this.
  • You lose nothing by trying. A total of 34 apartments will be allocated, but it is not certain that only the top 34 on the waiting list will receive an apartment. Some may choose not to apply, and others may not meet all the allocation conditions.

  • The estimated rent for each apartment type can be found in Blær’s price list.

  • The aim is to hand over 23 apartments on Skyggnisbraut to tenants at the end of December 2024 and 11 apartments on Silfra- and Gæfutjörn at the beginning of February 2025.

  • You may apply for up to two apartment types at Blær, but you can also apply for just one. It does not affect your chances of getting an apartment whether you apply for one type or two.

  • Upon allocation, you will receive detailed information about the apartments available to you. You may then apply for the apartment that you prefer within a specified period, but if none is chosen, you will be allocated an apartment randomly. Priority in choosing apartments is determined by your number on the waiting list.
